Surviving the first month

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Wow! The first 5 weeks have gone by in a whirlwind. We’ve been SO LUCKY and incredibly grateful to have so much family help. Grandmas Brenda and Kathy, great-grandma Rebecca, and Uncle Mark have been cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the babies. This has allowed me to recover from surgery and Owen and I to adjust to caring for two newborns. It has also been a daily reminder of how much we wish we lived close to family. It would be lovely to all live nearby each other!

Many of our friends have also visited and brought meals and gifts. Owen and I have even been able to get out for two movies, including Patrick’s opening of Fruitfly, and we’ve spent days out alone to shop for furniture and cars.

We (Grandma Kathy, Great-grandma Becca, Owen, Mark, Nico, Olive) also rented a mini van and took a drive around San Francisco to visit the places where great-grandmother grew up; her schools and parents’ flower shop and favorite haunts. It was a great time and fun to bring the Nico and Olive. We also stopped at a baby store to weigh them: a little over 8 pounds!! We’re definitely leaning towards buying a mini van for convenience sake.

Tomorrow Kathy and Rebecca are leaving and Owen is going back to work on Monday. I admit, I’m a little terrified of this, but I think I’ll manage. The worst is not being able to console two crying babies at the same time. Taking turns is really the only way. It will also be a challenge maneuvering both on and off the breasts together.

Nico Sings

In her spare time between feedings (roughly every 2 hours), Nico got a chance to head into the recording studio and lay down a new song called “Nico’s Dream.” Nico once told Rolling Stone that her main influences are electronica and breast milk–it really shows on this song.
